Rich Text is a field type that enables authors to create rich text content, similar to traditional “What you see is what you get” (wysiwyg) editors. The key difference here is that the Contentful Rich Text Field (RTF) response is returned as pure JSON rather than HTML
The Rich Text Format is a proprietary document file format with published specification developed by Microsoft Corporation from 1987 until 2008 for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products.. The menu bar at the top of the Rich Text editor provides authors with all the usual text formatting capabilities, including creating links to a static URL, and inserting links to Contentful entries and assets from within the same Contentful space.
A key aspect of Rich Text is the possibility to customize the field in a way that authors are limited to using specified formatting options.. For example, you can limit the formatting options to only include paragraph tags, or limit the kinds of entries that can be hyperlinked or embedded.

In order to write in bold or italics, you just have to use the i tag or the b tag. You an also use the em tag or the strong tag, and AO3 actually show you how to use them
Click on that icon to see all of the html that AO3 allows, and examples of how to do it :). unfortunately I can’t show you here on tumblr because when I try to add html tags to a post they disappear completely in mobile view 🙁

You can use html formatting to create bold or italics in AO3. You can also use Rich Text mode (there’s a button at the top right of the box where you write your fic) and then use the B and I buttons for bold and italic
I’m still in the process of going back through my fics to fix them. It’s taking a long time, so I suggest doing it right up front if you decide to go that route.
This was an enormous PITA, especially to make sure the formatting would work equally well on mobile devices without using CSS for the indents, but it was worth it. It turned out nice and I got compliments on how it looked.

But, I do have a couple tips to help you out on your first run-through (and actually some helpful tricks I think some more familiar users may not know, as well)!. BTW since we’re on the topic, if you use the subscribe function on AO3!!! Did you know about the different ways to subscribe to an author, a series, or an individual work?
Same deal if you want to subscribe to a series, you must be on the series page. Subscribing to a fic within that series will only subscribe you to that specific fic – you will get updates if that story is updated/chapters are added, but not if a new work is added to the series.

Both writers and readers have probably noticed formatting inconsistencies when reading fics on Ao3. Who wants to work hard for weeks or months on a fic, only to have it reveal distracting formatting issues with extra spacing, italics, or punctuation once it’s published? Nobody we know! So we thought we’d put together some tips to prevent this annoying problem, which usually arises from transferring work from Microsoft Word or Google Docs to Ao3.
If using Microsoft Word: The default style for a new “Blank” document in Word includes a 10pt. If you are not sure how your document is formatted, just open your document
When you start typing, then hit “enter” for a paragraph break, a space will appear in between your paragraphs so you won’t have to hit enter twice, and no empty paragraphs will be brought over to Ao3.. If using Google Docs: Make sure your line spacing settings for your document are set to ‘Insert Break After Paragraph.” This will make it so that every time you hit “enter” to move to a new paragraph, it will insert space automatically for you

it’s a gdoc script where you past your text from the gdoc you wrote in/imported from word, press the run script button, and it formats your text automatically into accurate HTML. you paste that in the textbox in AO3 with the HTML label and you’re good to go

One of the AO3 translation volunteers (Min) created a Google Docs script to handle issues when copying from a doc into AO3. It contains the script that will do all of the HTML formatting for you.
– Go up to the top menu and click the new menu option Post to AO3, then choose Prepare for posting into the HTML editor. Note: because this is an apps script, you’ll need to give it permission to run the first time.
To revert your text back to normal, just go back up to that menu and choose Remove HTML. Once you have the doc, you can make a new copy of it for each new fic you write and that way you’ll always have that script available when you need it 🙂
