What is rich text? [3]

Rich Text is a field type that enables authors to create rich text content, similar to traditional “What you see is what you get” (wysiwyg) editors. The key difference here is that the Contentful Rich Text Field (RTF) response is returned as pure JSON rather than HTML
The Rich Text Format is a proprietary document file format with published specification developed by Microsoft Corporation from 1987 until 2008 for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products.. The menu bar at the top of the Rich Text editor provides authors with all the usual text formatting capabilities, including creating links to a static URL, and inserting links to Contentful entries and assets from within the same Contentful space.
A key aspect of Rich Text is the possibility to customize the field in a way that authors are limited to using specified formatting options.. For example, you can limit the formatting options to only include paragraph tags, or limit the kinds of entries that can be hyperlinked or embedded.

Tutorial: Posting a Work on AO3 FAQ [4]

This tutorial will guide you through the Post New Work form on Archive of Our Own (AO3) step by step, and assumes you have no prior knowledge of posting a work on AO3. It also assumes you’re accessing the site in the default skin; please make allowances if your site customization is different.
Note that the success of the import function largely depends on the originating site and its compatibility with AO3; we are currently unable to import from several sites.. You can find more information on posting, editing, and importing works at the Posting and Editing FAQ.
There is no auto-save function while you are working in this page, and AO3 drafts are deleted one month after their creation date. To learn more about drafts and how they work on AO3, please refer to the Posting and Editing FAQ.

AO3 Comment of the Day [5]

Anonymoushi! I’m not so much an informatic or something… but other users, in the comments, can write in bold letters.
In order to write in bold or italics, you just have to use the i tag or the b tag. You an also use the em tag or the strong tag, and AO3 actually show you how to use them
Click on that icon to see all of the html that AO3 allows, and examples of how to do it :). unfortunately I can’t show you here on tumblr because when I try to add html tags to a post they disappear completely in mobile view 🙁

AO3 News [6]

I’m trying to upload a story that has bold/italics in the text, but whenever I preview it, all the formatting is gone. There are some issues with our Rich Text Editor, but without knowing your word processor and browser combination, it’s hard to say what’s going wrong in your case.
This isn’t something we can fix easily, as the way Google uses CSS for formatting clashes with the way we do. (We allow users to create work skins, which can be easily dropped if they interfere with another user’s accessibility needs
Our upcoming code deploy will include an updated version of our Rich Text Editor, TinyMCE, which should fix several bugs. However, some word processors and writing tools will remain sadly incompatible with the Archive

AO3 News [7]

There are some issues with our Rich Text Editor, but without knowing your word processor and browser combination, it’s hard to say what’s going wrong in your case.. One thing we do know is that pasting from a Google Drive document will remove formatting markers, which is rather unfortunate, since a lot of people use Google to store and work on their stories
(We allow users to create work skins, which can be easily dropped if they interfere with another user’s accessibility needs. We don’t allow inline styles, which is what Google uses for bold and italics.)
However, some word processors and writing tools will remain sadly incompatible with the Archive. Your best bet are Word or Open/LibreOffice, and an up-to-date browser.

Italics tag in OTT [9]

When your day-to-day work consists of a lot of document editing, you know that every document format requires its own approach and in some cases specific software. Handling a seemingly simple OTT file can often grind the entire process to a halt, especially when you are trying to edit with insufficient software
With DocHub, you are going to work with an editing multitool for any occasion or document type. Minimize the time you used to spend navigating your old software’s features and learn from our intuitive interface while you do the job
Open it and go straight to productivity; no prior training or reading guides is required to reap the benefits DocHub brings to papers management processing. Begin with taking a couple of minutes to register your account now.

if you’re not antifascist, what’s wrong with you? — what’s a good way to formatting texting in a fic?… [10]

You can use html formatting to create bold or italics in AO3. You can also use Rich Text mode (there’s a button at the top right of the box where you write your fic) and then use the B and I buttons for bold and italic
I’m still in the process of going back through my fics to fix them. It’s taking a long time, so I suggest doing it right up front if you decide to go that route.
This was an enormous PITA, especially to make sure the formatting would work equally well on mobile devices without using CSS for the indents, but it was worth it. It turned out nice and I got compliments on how it looked.

HTML For AO3 Comments [11]

Hey all! Did you know that you can format your comments on AO3 using HTML?. Wanna italicize a word? put this code around it: your words here
Want to add a span line? Just a simple

will make one appear.. Want to insert a gif into your comment? It’s as simple as adding this piece of code:

H1 will be the biggest and H6 the smallest but they’ll all change the size of what would be the normal comment text:. You can even indent a quote from the fic by using the “blockquote” code around it:

their words here

First things first: I think to a certain extent, what to post first is going to be entirely up to you. Whatever you feel like writing, whatever format it’s in, you should write it up and post it! Or, depending on how long you’ve been using the site as a guest, you can look through other people’s content to pay attention to tagging, author’s notes, formatting – that kind of thing
But, I do have a couple tips to help you out on your first run-through (and actually some helpful tricks I think some more familiar users may not know, as well)!. BTW since we’re on the topic, if you use the subscribe function on AO3!!! Did you know about the different ways to subscribe to an author, a series, or an individual work?
Same deal if you want to subscribe to a series, you must be on the series page. Subscribing to a fic within that series will only subscribe you to that specific fic – you will get updates if that story is updated/chapters are added, but not if a new work is added to the series.

Wolfstar Librarian [13]

hello librarian! do you happen to know if you can use italics in AO3 summaries? because i can’t, for the life of me, figure out HOW. Oh sure thing friend! So it turns out there are two different ways to make your text italicized.
– Add on either side of the text you want italicized.. If you have a question about fandom, ask the Librarian!
To make your text italicized, you’re just going to have to write a little html right in the summary box. You just need to put and around the text you want to italicize, like this:

Formatting Tips – From Word and Docs to Ao3 [14]

Both writers and readers have probably noticed formatting inconsistencies when reading fics on Ao3. Who wants to work hard for weeks or months on a fic, only to have it reveal distracting formatting issues with extra spacing, italics, or punctuation once it’s published? Nobody we know! So we thought we’d put together some tips to prevent this annoying problem, which usually arises from transferring work from Microsoft Word or Google Docs to Ao3.
If using Microsoft Word: The default style for a new “Blank” document in Word includes a 10pt. If you are not sure how your document is formatted, just open your document
When you start typing, then hit “enter” for a paragraph break, a space will appear in between your paragraphs so you won’t have to hit enter twice, and no empty paragraphs will be brought over to Ao3.. If using Google Docs: Make sure your line spacing settings for your document are set to ‘Insert Break After Paragraph.” This will make it so that every time you hit “enter” to move to a new paragraph, it will insert space automatically for you

you’re unnatural, babe! [15]

It’ll add in an extra paragraph tag, making a huge gap between all your paragraphs, or it’ll add spaces next to formatted text, turning “this” (italics text, non-italics quotes) into “ this “.. Paste your chapter/fic into a new Word document, with all its text formatted regularly
click the dropdown (by the searchbar) and click Replace.. Make sure your text cursor is in Find What (as above).
If you have other formatted text, such as Bolded text, repeat the above steps (Format > Font), but select Bold instead, and replace the text with: ^&. (NOTE: If you don’t hit Enter twice between paragraphs, but instead only do so once, then enter ^p instead of ^p^p.

Posting your fic from Google Docs to AO3? [16]

(I’ve removed instructions for fanfiction.net since I very, very rarely post there. I dislike their text editor and their feedback system
However, there is one bug regarding italicized text that you need to keep in mind.. – In google docs, set paragraph spacing to Add space after paragraph.
– When you’re finished with your text, paste it into MS Word.. – Quickly review the text in MS Word for anything that looks strange or misspellings.

pasting special formatting from Scrivener to… [17]

copy/pasting special formatting from Scrivener to AO3. I always just copy/paste directly from Scrivener to AO3 now, but even with style copy paste or html it strips out all the italics
So I copy/pasted the segment into Word, THEN copied it from Word to AO3, and… style intact. It doesn’t work with Wordpad, unfortunately, but I thought I’d pass it along

quick guide on ao3 work skins [18]

basically work skins are how you make this or this or this. you can access them via the skins link in the sidebar menu (top menu on smartphones).
there’s also this guide for making your own work skins but the css section honestly makes the whole thing sound way harder than it actually is. if you don’t already know css or are super basic like me, you could just take code from existing work skins and just modify them to your liking
align text to the center/right or create lines of the same length. *optional: for border, you can choose to have a dashed or dotted line and also manipulate the color (e.g

How to get AO3 to properly import text from google docs without losing formatting [19]

Between both these times—I drew a really thin line.. When your life has lost its meaning, maybe you need a little time.
related to that last ask, i mentioned that pasting google docs text into the AO3 textbox gets really, really weird with formatting. if you’ve done it, chances are you know what i mean
it’s a gdoc script where you past your text from the gdoc you wrote in/imported from word, press the run script button, and it formats your text automatically into accurate HTML. you paste that in the textbox in AO3 with the HTML label and you’re good to go

Pens, Swords, Stuff [20]

One of the AO3 translation volunteers (Min) created a Google Docs script to handle issues when copying from a doc into AO3. It contains the script that will do all of the HTML formatting for you.
– Go up to the top menu and click the new menu option Post to AO3, then choose Prepare for posting into the HTML editor. Note: because this is an apps script, you’ll need to give it permission to run the first time.
To revert your text back to normal, just go back up to that menu and choose Remove HTML. Once you have the doc, you can make a new copy of it for each new fic you write and that way you’ll always have that script available when you need it 🙂
