If you’re a big fan of TikTok then you’ve probably seen people talking about being ‘shadowbanned’.

This long term actually has a much simpler meaning than you’d expect, simply meaning a temporary ban, usually because somebody has broken TikTok’s terms and conditions.

What does ‘shadowbanned’ mean?

If someone is ‘shadowbanned’ on social media, it means their content has been blocked or partially blocked.

However, it will never actually be obvious that the user has ever been banned, your content is simply restricted for a certain amount of time.

A shadow ban also doesn’t stop you from uploading any new content.

How do you know if you are ‘shadowbanned’?

The TikTok app won’t ever actually tell you if you’re ‘shadowbanned’, but if you are then you’ll probably notice.

If you’re uploading new TikTok’s and they’re not getting many views, then that probably means that you’re shadow banned, as TikTok is no longer showing your videos on any For You pages.

However, accounts that follow you will most likely still be able to see your videos.

How to get ‘un-shadowbanned’ on TikTok

If you believe that you could be shadow banned, there’s a few things you can do.

  1. Delete any content that may have been against TikTok’s terms and conditions and therefore could have been the reason why you got shadowbanned.
  2. Clear your TikTok cache.
  3. Try deleting the app and re-downloading again.
  4. Wait! It could take up to a few weeks for your account to go back to normal.

Why did you get ‘shadowbanned’?

The main reason why people’s accounts get ‘shadowbanned’ is usually because they broke one of TikTok’s terms and conditions.

TikTok has an extensive set of Community Guidelines in which it states everything that is not appropriate to be posted on the site.
